The game is played on a standard 8 by 8 square board, mirroring the dimensions familiar to chess enthusiasts worldwide. However, the initial setup features notable differences: the white queen is positioned on e1 while the white king resides on d1, ensuring that each king is positioned to the left of its queen from the player's perspective. Additionally, the pawns are lined up on the third rank for white and the sixth rank for black, introducing a fresh strategic layer for players right from the start.
The movement of key pieces in Makruk is akin to that of traditional chess. The king can advance one square in any direction—horizontally, vertically, or diagonally—while the rook retains its ability to traverse any number of squares along a rank or file, as long as its path remains unobstructed. Pawns also follow a familiar protocol by moving one square forward and attacking diagonally. However, players must adapt to the distinct movements of other pieces, such as the queen, which moves a single square diagonally, and the bishop, which shifts one square diagonally or vertically forward.
