Tute is an engaging trick-taking card game that falls within the Ace-Ten family, originating in Italy and known as Tutti in its early days. This captivating game gained immense popularity in Spain during the 19th century, becoming a staple in card-playing culture. Played with a unique 40-card deck consisting of traditional Spanish or Italian playing cards, Tute provides players with an exciting and strategic gaming experience.
In Tute, each player is dealt eight cards, setting the stage for a series of thrilling tricks. The player who does not deal leads the first trick with any card of their choice. The next player must then follow suit, attempting to win the trick if they hold a card in the led suit. Should the second player not hold any cards of the led suit but possess one or more trump cards, they are required to play a trump. If they have neither, they may play any card from their hand. The player who plays the highest trump, or the highest card in the led suit if no trumps are used, wins the trick.
The winner of each trick has the advantage of drawing from the stock, taking the first card while the losing player takes the second. This system introduces exciting opportunities for strategy, as the winner can make crucial announcements before leading into the subsequent trick. Players, or pairs, who secure at least one trick gain the ability to declare card combinations for additional round points. One of the game's pinnacle achievements is collecting all four Kings, which allows a player to declare 'tute' (all), resulting in an automatic victory for that round.
Moreover, possessing both the King and Knight of the trump suit enables a player to declare 'las cuarenta' (forty), rewarding them with an impressive 40 round points. Similarly, having the King and Knight of any other suit allows for the declaration of 'veinte' (twenty), adding an additional 20 points to the player's score. With its blend of skill, strategy, and the thrill of competition, Tute continues to engage and entertain players, making it a cherished game in the card-playing community.
